Overview
Thermogravimetric Analysis, or TGA, is a powerful analytical tool for measuring changes in a sample’s mass as its environmental temperature shifts. When coupled with other instrumental techniques such as mass spectrometers and infrared spectrometers, chemical analysis of the evolved gases is achieved. These hyphenated techniques have a long history in thermal analysis. In addition, chemically separating the TGA off-gases with a gas chromatograph prior to injection into a mass spectrometer can further enhance the chemical information obtained. The thermal analysis laboratory interested in off-gas analysis can benefit from having multiple hyphenated techniques available and may even connect more than one technique to the output of a single TGA. This talk will focus on comparing these techniques and illustrating the types of data obtained from them.
