Strategies for Rheological Evaluation of Adhesives
Overview
Adhesives are widely used in industries and by consumers. A quantitative understanding of the physical performance of such materials, such as adhesiveness, cohesiveness, tack, and peel performance, are important for quality control and for guiding formulators. Rheology is a powerful tool that provides direct measurement of a material’s viscoelastic properties, which correlate to their processing and end-use performance. This webinar will discuss strategies for comprehensive rheological analysis on different kinds of adhesive materials using rotational rheometers. Specifically, we will cover flow viscosity testing, tack and peel testing, dynamic temperature ramps, and frequency sweep testing for evaluating adhesive performance, as well as creep testing for monitoring adhesive cold flow. A Time-Temperature Superposition (TTS) and rheology interconversion techniques will also be covered for predicting the viscoelastic behavior over several decades of time.
About the Speaker
Tianhong (Terri) Chen, Ph.D. is a Senior Applications Support Scientist with TA Instruments currently supporting the Rheology and DMA product lines. She received her PhD degree in Polymer Science from Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) in China, specializing in polymer synthesis and characterization. She did her post-doc research and later became a research assistant professor at the University of Maryland. During that time, her research was focused on biopolymer modifications and analysis. Dr. Chen joined TA Instruments in 2004. Her key responsibilities at TA Instruments are customer support, consultation, and teaching DMA and rheology training courses. Dr. Chen has more than 50 publications in peer-reviewed journals and two US patents.
